The inspiration of the Abyss Science and Technology Project comes from Jiaolong. Jiaolong invites marine scientists to participate in the sea test process during the 5000-meter and 7000-meter sea tests, fully tapping the scientific value of each test potential, so that the engineers and technicians participating in the test can appreciate the benefits of the close combination of scientists and engineers. On the other hand, from the special issue commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 50th anniversary of mankind's arrival in the Mariana Trench - Challenger Abyss in 2010, the United States learned that abyss science and technology is the most advanced science and technology in the marine field. Therefore, after the completion of Jiaolong 7000m sea test, marine geologists with international vision, who are also behind the success of Jiaolong project, the group leader of Jiaolong sea test technical advisory expert group, the group leader of site acceptance of sea test, and Dr. Ding Kang, a senior scientist of the University of Minnesota, put forward to the Ministry of Science and Technology such proposals as The following suggestion: Comparing with the manned submersible capable of carrying scientists in the world, only Jiaolong can carry out scientific research in the 6500-7100 metre depth section of the so-called Hadal Depth, which has very special biological activities, but in the scientific and technological circles of our country. This unique deep potential advantage is estimated to be lost in 3-5 years or less. This submarine operation shows that Jiaolong 7000m submarine test area is an important scientific research site, which is close to the Challenger abyss and has rich and obvious diversity of biological and geological activities. And it can get the support of Micronesia. It is suggested that relevant departments should set up corresponding projects and plans for abyss scientific research, organize scientific voyages within three years, return to the Mariana Trench, and submerge in this 7000m test area for scientific research. In this way, we can create the abyss ecology, abyss biology and abyss geology which have not yet formed in our country, and carry out pioneering work in this latest frontier field of deep-sea Science in order to obtain important and latest discoveries and achievements. This is a golden opportunity for China's deep-sea scientific community to lead the frontier field.
As the head and first deputy director of the overall and integrated project of Jiaolong manned submersible, Dr. Cui Weicheng feels that this proposal is very far-sighted, but judging from his personal experience of participating in Jiaolong project, depending on our existing scientific research system, it is doubtful whether this once in a lifetime opportunity can be seized. Ask. But even if it is seized, only 7,000 meters is just the beginning for abyss science, which is not enough to ensure that science and technology are in the lead, because there are several landers in the world and an American AUV/ROV unmanned submarine (AUV/ROV) can reach 10,000 meters deep. If we really want to take the lead, we must also develop scientific research and investigation equipment capable of carrying out the whole sea depth (11,000 meters) as soon as possible.
Abyssal ecology, abyssal biology and abyssal geology are very important for the complete understanding of marine science and even geoscience. They play an important role in the fields of earth ecology, global climate, marine environmental protection, the study of the origin of earth's life, earthquake prediction and so on. It is impossible for countries to engage in such research. More importantly, China has gone further on the basis of the 7000-meter Jiaolong, which is indeed the best time to seize the highest point of science and technology. It is of great positive significance both to improve China's international image and to benefit all mankind. Therefore, Dr. Cui Weicheng decided to resign from his various positions and choose to rely on Shanghai Ocean University to recruit new teams to carry out the Abyss Science and Technology Project.
Why can't we take advantage of the experienced Jiaolong team and need to recruit new inexperienced teams to develop abyss technology? This is because of the limitation of our understanding during the 11th Five-Year Plan and the situation that Jiaolong could not be tested at sea. The 12th Five-Year Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology did not include the project of catching up with advanced technology. Instead, the emphasis of manned submersible was put on the development of the home-made 4500m manned submersible. In addition to the experimental application of Jiaolong manned submersible in the next 3-5 years and the summary declaration of Jiaolong's achievements, these three major events are concentrated on Jiaolong's development team, and the development project of the 12th Five-Year Plan is expected to be completed by the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan. Therefore, when Jiaolong team has completed the project already undertaken before launching the project demonstration of the third generation deep-sea manned submersible, it will not start the development project until the mid-14th Five-Year Plan at the earliest, which will be ten years later than now.
In order to speed up the development of deep-sea high-tech in China, the feasibility demonstration and key technology tackling of the third generation manned submersible should be started immediately. The main obstacle is the development team. Secondly, the main value of deep-sea manned submersible is marine scientific research and marine environmental protection. Thirdly, in the early years, especially during the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the state is unlikely to set up a project to support the operation of the team may rely on private capital, and universities have good alumni resources. Therefore, the project leader decided to relay on a domestic university to re-establish a new team, and strive to enter the 863 major project of the Ministry of Science and Technology at the beginning of the 13th Five-Year Plan, and to develop the manned submersible synchronously with the 4500m manned submersible at the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan. The greatest advantage of doing so is that we have won the golden decade of catching up with the advanced level of international deep-sea high technology.
The success of Jiaolong's development only makes us crowded into the club of the Deepwater high-tech developed countries, but there is still a gap between our real technical level and the most advanced level. If the 10,000-meter manned submersible is also developed, China will be an undisputed marine high-tech power. Only when we win the status of a powerful country can we have equal opportunities for dialogue and cooperation with the developed countries in the West. Only through international cooperation can China's marine engineering technology be developed in an all-round way. Therefore, through the support and joint efforts of our compatriots concerned about the development of marine science and technology in China, we hope to establish an abyss science and technology mobile laboratory within 10 years, which includes a new type of scientific research vessel of 1000 tons. Besides the basic experimental facilities, the special equipment on board is a lander of 10,000 meters and a AUV/ROV composite of 10,000 meters. Man-made submersible, a 10,000-meter HOV/ROV composite submersible, can be either unmanned or one person to dive, up to two people to dive and a variety of advanced operating tools. In this way, after 10 years of efforts, we can synchronize China's deep-sea science and technology to the world's leading level, and at the same time, establish a good material basis for future international cooperation. This is the goal of the Abyss Science and Technology Project and the first phase of the Abyss Science and Technology Research Center. When the Abyss Science and Technology Mobile Laboratory is completed, the Abyss Science and Technology Research Center needs to recruit more marine scientists to develop marine science in many directions.
