(Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science)。

Dr. Jian Lin is a Senior Scientist and Henry Bigelow Chair for Excellence in Oceanography at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). He earned his Ph.D. in geophysics from Brown University in 1988 and B.S. in geophysics from University of Science and Technology of China in 1982.

Dr. Lin has conducted pioneering deep-ocean research of mid-ocean ridges, hydrothermal vents, deep-trench earthquakes, and tsunamis. He has led and joined close to 20 international expeditions in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, as well as the South China Sea and Mediterranean Sea. In early 2014 he will serve as a Co-Chief Scientist of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 349 to investigate the opening history of the South China Sea through deep ocean drilling. He has also conducted extensive research of earthquake interactions in many parts of the world, including California, Algeria, Japan, China, Chile, Caribbean, and the ocean floor.

Dr. Lin has served as chair of the InterRidge Science Program, which coordinates international cooperation in research and exploration of the deep-ocean geology, biology, and hydrothermal venting of mid-ocean ridges. He was a member of a U.S. national committee on tsunami warning and preparedness. Appointed by the National Research Council and the National Academy of Sciences, the committee conducted review of the U.S. tsunami warning and forecast system and overview of the nation's tsunami preparedness.

Dr. Lin was recognized by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) as one of the most cited authors on earthquake research. A paper he co-authored was the most-cited earthquake research article of a decade. In 2007, Dr. Lin was elects a Fellow of the Geological Society of America (GSA) for his “innovative, significant, and continuing contributions to the understanding of global ocean ridge processes and earthquake interactions.” In 2008, he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for his “outstanding contributions to seismology and marine tectonics”.

At the occasion of Dr. Lin’s election as an AAAS Fellow, WHOI President and Director Dr. Susan Avery said in a statement: “This recognition confirms the high esteem for Jian and his research among colleagues around the world. His tireless work, accomplishments, and leadership have not only advanced our knowledge of marine tectonics, but also the cause of global scientific collaboration for the benefit of all.”
